Ugento

The name of the city comes from the ancient name of the Ionic Sea, “Ausonium", the name “ausentum” is “ugento”. The origins of the city are very old, but the first origins of the city are from the messapic period when it was also proclaimed as capital town.

Surrounded by great walls from the beginig of the VI century, the messapic Ugento had to face up the attacks from the greeks. Fisrt it was the enemy of the greeks, then it became the united force against the Roman domination.Under the Byzantine domination the city developed and stabilized from the economical point of view, but in the 842 was devastated.

 

Also known as one the most beautiful places in Puglia, beasides its beautiful sea it has also many beautiful culturel places. It has an important artistic patrimony. Before entering in the streets of the town ,you can admire the church Santa Maria del Casale, located on the field called “serra delle Fontane”.

 

The church was built in a roman style and has many fresques decorations. In the center of the city we find the church Santa Maria dell'Assunta, just in front of the Palazzo Rovito, who was demolished by the turks but we can still see some of the remanings of the paintings of the old church. The Cathedal was built on the remains of a gottic church and has inside some baroccue monuments and paintings. Not very far there is the castle built in the X century with great halls and beautiful paintings inside. The church was built in a roman style and has many fresques decorations. The monuments most worth visiting at Ugento are the church of San Biago, built to an octagonal design in the 1800’s, the Benedictine monastery, the church of St Anthony of Padua, the cathedral and the clock tower. The church of St Cosma and Daminiano with its tiled roof is a wonderful reminder of the Byzantine era. Above all Ugento is noted for its Marina and the Torre San Giovanni. The coastline here is characterised by its golden sandy beaches nestled along a sandy coastline.

 

How to arrive in Ugento

By car: From Bari, where you arrive on the highway A14, you continue on to Brindisi and Lecce and follow the SS 101 (Lecce Gallipoli, exist Ugento).
By train: Is necessary to arrive at the station FFSS di Lecce, then take one train of the Ferovie Sud Est or just one local bus (Salentoinbus, STP).
By plane: The closest airport to Ugento is Brindisi airport (for further information on the planes/airports visit Aeroporti di Puglia) from where you can reach Lecce by bus or just rent a car.
